The final of the European Police Women’s Volleyball Championship came to an end on 14 September 2024 after a week of exciting matches at SPORTCAMPUS SAAR with a dramatic final.

Eight teams from all over Europe competed in this tournament, and the grand final was played between the German and Finnish teams. In a nerve-wracking tie-break, the German team led by Mira Bohlen from Saarland won by a very narrow margin of 16:14 and secured the title.

In the weeks leading up to the Olympic Games, Olympians from all over the world prepared for the Games in Paris at the SPORTCAMPUS SAAR pre-camps. These training preparations were crowned with eleven Olympic medals.

Including all trainers, physiotherapists and other team members, 400 people from around 30 nations stayed at SPORTCAMPUS SAAR in connection with the Olympic Games.

Tim Hellwig, Lisa Tertsch, Lasse Lührs and Laura Lindemann have won Olympic gold in Paris. In a thrilling final sprint, Lindemann prevailed against the starters from the USA and Great Britain.
It is only the third Olympic medal for the German Triathlon Union at the Summer Games. Jan Frodeno, who was training in Saarland at the time, won gold in Beijing in 2008, while Stephan Vuckovic won silver eight years earlier in Sydney. The German triathletes had not yet finished on the podium in the individual competitions in Paris.

The German men’s national team narrowly lost their Olympic dress rehearsal. At the SPORTCAMPUS SAAR in Saarbrücken, the team of national coach Michal Winiarski had a thrilling exchange of blows with Brazil, but were ultimately defeated 1:3 (18:25, 22:25, 25:20, 21:25).

Thanks to the rousing presentation by hall announcer Matthias Pons (TV Bliesen), the atmosphere in the sold-out hall was buzzing right up until the final whistle. ‘It was fun to play here, the atmosphere was great, it was a good final test for next week,’ said local hero Moritz Reichert. In the end, Brazil were ‘a bit more stable in attack, they found better solutions, especially from defensive balls or poor receptions, and those are the two or three points that make the difference’.

Where world-class athletes normally train, world-class musicians made their grand entrance last Friday. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra opened the Saar 2024 Music Festival with a magnificent concert.

‘A top orchestra opening the Saar Music Festival in a gymnasium – is that even possible and how does it sound? The concert by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra sounded amazingly good for a gymnasium. This sentence is to be understood as high praise,’ said SR-Kultur editor Karsten Neuschwender in his review of the evening.
